What are the advantages of a semi-rigid MTB?

In short, semi-rigid MTBs offer a light ride, superior pedaling efficiency, easy maintenance and affordability. However, it's important to note that semi-rigid MTBs lack rear suspension, which can make riding more difficult on rough terrain. The choice between a semi-rigid and a full-suspension MTB will depend on the terrain you're riding.

MTB hardtail

The term 'hardtail MTB', synonymous with semi-rigid MTB, comes from the construction of the bike's frame. A 'hardtail' MTB frame is rigid at the rear, without suspension, and has front suspension. The word 'hardtail' comes from English and means that the rear is 'hard'. The term was first used to describe dirt bikes without rear suspension in the 1970s. It was later adopted to describe MTBs with front suspension, but no rear suspension, and this terminology is now commonly used in the MTB industry.

Suspension forks, the difference with a rigid MTB

The suspension fork helps absorb shock and vibration when riding over rough, uneven terrain. It is designed to adapt to obstacles on the trail, such as roots, rocks and bumps, and to keep the MTB wheels in contact with the ground for better traction and grip.
